Project info

The Saturna Residence is a private home nestled atop a cliff on Saturna Island, British Columbia – surrounded by forest and facing the vast ocean. Inspired by the work of Cutler Anderson and Tom Kundig, the architecture reflects a deep connection to nature and an appreciation for timeless, thoughtful design. Our task was to visualise an interior that balances two contrasting qualities: the clean lines and precision of modern architecture, the warmth and texture of a rustic cabin. The clients requested a space free from visible drywall in the main kitchen and living area, focusing instead on natural materials like wood and stone. In this project, we presented two variations to explore how this home could come to life – each offering a slightly different interpretation of their vision.

Challenge

One of the biggest challenges was capturing the tactile authenticity of natural materials. The clients placed high importance on how the wood and stone surfaces would feel and look – so achieving realistic textures and lighting was critical. Another key aspect was the surrounding landscape. With no reference photography of the actual site, we had to carefully craft the environment to reflect the real mood and setting of the island.
